Notes and Reminders Term 4 Week 6

It is hard to believe how quickly this term is racing by! With Show Week now over our school pool is scheduled to open. Lets hope for some nice warm days to finish the term!

Swimming
Kahikatea Hub have swimming on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, plus every other Monday. K15/16 and K17/18 will be alternating the single Monday slot. We suggest that the children bring their togs to school every day, as occasionally we do get the chance to swim on a different day with classes out on trips or camps. The children need to bring their swimming togs, towel and rash top if they have one in a separate bag - draw string bags are great as it prevents things from falling out. This is a time when items of clothing tend to get lost, so please can you check that your child's clothing is named - thank you.

Athletics
We will continue with our athletic practises this week ready for the Year 3/4 athletics day next Tuesday (28th November), with the postponement day being Thursday 30th November. The children are encouraged to wear suitable house coloured mufti to school on this day, as well as trainers. A letter will go out this week with further details.

Sports Canterbury Top Team Challenge - Monday 11 December
Today the children have brought home a notice about our 'Top Team Challenge' morning on Monday 11 December at school. If you haven't yet seen this, please have a look in your child's bag. We require two parent/caregiver helpers from each home class to run this event. We really appreciate your ongoing support with school events and hope you can join us for our celebration of learning for the year.

Thank you to all the families that have returned the 'pink permission form' for Beach Education. Please see your home class teacher if you know you have not signed this yet. As this school trip involves water, we require extra permission. Your home class teacher will email you if they are shot on parent/caregiver helpers for the day. Reading

As part of K15's weekly reading the children researched a question relating to their reading book. They then shared their findings with children from a different reading group.

Oral language

This term Kahikatea's focus is favourite books. The children have to try to 'sell' their book to the class by sharing with them some interesting details, as well as what it is about the book that they really like.

Long Jump ....

This week Kahikatea have been out practising for our upcoming Athletics Day.

Here is Harry from K16 showing the correct technique for long jumping.... remember you need...

  • a quick run up
  • to have a one foot take off as close to the front of the mat as possible
  • a two feet landing
  • a forward projection of your body - try not to put your hands down behind you to balance yourself!
  • to walk out the END of the sandpit

You can practise all of these things at home in the backyard!

Welcome to Week 3 in Kahikatea Hub.

Welcome to week 3.
Well done to the children who shared their favourite book last Friday. We all thoroughly enjoyed your book selling and many children were talking about heading to the library to find some new books to read. We look forward to this Friday with some new books shared.

Hats

Please ensure your child has a named school hat at school each day. It is going to be a lovely warm week, so it is important the children are managing themselves and are sun smart.

Beach Education

On Friday the children came home with a pink permission form regarding Beach Education. If you haven't yet seen it, please have a look in your child's bag. Although you have given permission at the beginning of the year for your child to attend trips, we do require extra permission for this trip as it involves water. Please send the form back to the classroom teacher as soon as possible. We also require 5 parent/caregiver helpers for each class on the trip. We really appreciate your support with our trips and hope you can join us for your child's trip.

Market Day
This Sunday is the St Albans School Market Day. If you have a stall we hope you enjoy selling all your goodies.
The wonderful PTA is working hard behind the scenes and on the day they have a number of stalls. If you have any spare time to volunteer and help out, please see one of the PTA parents at the cafe this week to offer your help.

Tissues
After a very long winter our stash of tissues has completely run out. If you haven't already done so, please can you purchase a box for the class to use. We would really appreciate some.
Thanks

Lucky Book Club orders are due in 31st October - TUESDAY to the office.

Kahikatea Notes and Reminders T4 W2

Spelling
This term the children from Kahikatea hub will be having a phonics interchange three times a week straight after lunch. We will be focusing on ensuring that the children can hear the sounds in words and then know the different spelling patterns for writing those sounds. They will need to have their whiteboard and pen at school for this.

Hats
Please can you ensure that your child has a named school hat with them every day. If they do not have a hat they will be limited to playing under the shade sails at morning break and lunch times.

WELCOME TO TERM 4 in KAHIKATEA HUB!

Welcome back to an exciting Term 4. We hope you have all had a wonderful break and managed to get some fresh air and time in the sunshine.

We have a busy term ahead with many fabulous learning opportunities and activities planned.

House Keeping:
  • This term we move into summer uniform. Girls need to wear the light weight gingham culottes or summer dress and boys navy blue shorts or pants and the navy blue polo t-shirt.
  • All children are to have a NAMED navy blue school hat everyday this term. Please encourage your child to keep their hat in their locker.
  • Please ask your child to check their stationery and ensure they have the necessary equipment at school for this term. Last term many children had misplaced their pencils, pens and glue-sticks and whiteboard pens had run out.
There will be an outdoor focus this term and we are looking at building the children's confidence and skills in a variety of activities.
  • In week 4 we begin our athletics rotations with an athletics day on Tuesday 28th November.
  • Beach Education is on the 6th and 7th December and we have a Sport Canterbury team day at school on the 11th December. These water based activities will require parent help and support. We will be sending out more information closer to the time.
  • We will be advised when the school pool opens later in the term.
  • Oral Language will have a focus on sharing a favourite book. Look out for the roster in your child's home learning book as to which Friday they will be sharing.
We are all looking forward to seeing the children back on Monday. Have a great weekend
Julie, Adela, Fiona, Trish and Jane

Mythical Stories

K15 and K16 wrote some wonderful mythical stories, devising their own mythical beast, hero and settings. On the last day of term we shared our stories with our buddy class. Our buddies gave us feedback about the story - a lot of the children liked the mythical beast!

Kahikatea ESOL Cultural Identity

Wow the Kahikatea Hub were very impressed with how well all the ESOL children presented their posters about 'Where They Come From' at last weeks assembly. It was lovely to share a cultural understanding with them. What fabulous traditional costumes they wore too. Thank you to Wendy who has worked with these children over the term.

Kahikatea Week 9 Term 3

Wow - Week 9 of Term 3 already! We are all so surprised how quickly this term has gone. We have been very impressed with how well the children are working as a hub. Keep up the fabulous effort!

Masks
We have been very busy mask making over the last few weeks, and the children have worked hard to create some very intricate Mythical creatures.  Thank you to those parents who sourced bits and pieces for the masks or came into the class to help us all.
If you have not yet seen your child's mask, pop in and have a look at our displays. The children all seem very proud of their finished masks.

Bake Sale
This term Totara Hub have been looking at new ideas for our school library. On Wednesday they are having a Bake Stall to raise funds for new books and resources for the library. Please support them and bring along a gold coin to purchase some delicious baking at morning tea time.

Reports
This Thursday you will be able to view your child's PE and Integrated Studies comment on their STAr account. Please ensure you remember your login details so you can view your chid's progress in these curriculum areas.

Term 4
Just a reminder that term 4 is a Summer term. The girls wear the summer uniform with the smaller blue and white gingham print (dress or culottes).
ALL children need to have a navy blue school hat or cap at school each day. This is compulsory.

Have a fantastic week

Week 8 Notes and Reminders For Mythical Mask Making

This week the Kahikatea Hub will be having a big art focus with creating mythical masks as part of our inquiry this term. A huge thank you to all the parents and caregivers who have already started to help their home base classes with this project. Your help is very much appreciated.

Due to these needed to be completed by the end of the week, the children will not be taking home a reading book every day. The children are encouraged to read for their enjoyment at home with a book of their selection. However, spelling will still continue as normal.

Once their mythical masks are completed they will have a photo with their mask on. They may like to wear a piece of clothing that accompanies their mythical creature for the photo too. Your home base teacher will email you on the date that your child will be having a photo, as well as the times when they would love some assistance this week.

Have a fabulous week!

Mask Making in K17 and K18

We couldn't wait to begin our mask making in K17 and 18 this week.  The children have spent the week carefully planning and collecting bits and bobs for their creations.  Here are a few photos from Day 1 and the start of their magnificent, mythical masks!
